Painting Chipboard Bookcases

We've been given some old bookcases. The type they sell in Argos. Chipboard covered in a fake, black, plastic wood.
Is there anything I can do to make them better? And a lighter colour? What sort of paint would I need?

Probably best with sticky back plastic (good old blue peter:rotfl: ), as paint will peel as it doesn't adhere well to the plastic. If you really want to paint rub down shelves well with very fine sand paper to scratch the surface and I have used emulsion. Can buy kitchen cupboard paint in two tins but for the price could probably buy new shelves as I think it was about £15 4 years ago.0
