I currenly rent my phoneline with BT and my call charges are paid to talktalk. Both of these companies are planning to start their free evening calls at 7pm.
I am planning to change my phone to virgin media.
Do I need to phone talktalk and BT to tell them I am leaving? or will virgin do that?
If I have to inform talk talk and BT, should I do it before I change to virgin or after?
Will BT or talktalk charge me for changing to virgin? I am on everycall choice 2 with talk talk, an old plan.
Thank you

Are you aware that VM is the country's most expensive voice telephony calls provider?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
If it's a cable based service your new broadband service will run over the same line that's used for your TV & not the phoneline, therefore a MAC code is not required.
Best bet is you get the install date off VM,Call BT & Talk Talk when you get the date from VM & inform them (BT/TT) that you want their services to stop 2 days AFTER the VM install is done.
That way if something goes wrong with the VM install, you're not left without a landline.
If it's NOT a cable based service, disregard the above.HOWEVER, still get the install date & phone BT & TT to advice them you're leaving them on "Insert date".
That's the same advice I gave out to new VM customers going onto cable when I was doing Pre Install Surveys.

I imagine Virgin will notify the other companies of the transer. It would be advised to give them a ring to make sure there are no issues, but be prepared for a retention attempt from both companies. Just out of interest why are you going to Virgin Media they have the highest call charges on the market? Have you checked what is available in your area at www.samknows.com if it is internet you are looking for too. It might be worth shopping around for packages before deciding.Cable or Virgin National?

Virgin national. Cannot get cable in our area.
Interruptions in internet service is the reason I am looking at virgin, as I am already with them.
If i were to choose plusnet (seem the cheapest) does anyone know how many days I can expect to be without internet, during the changeover?
Thanks for the tip about calling TT and BT two days after install date.
thanks all.0 -
Migration from TT (non LU line) to PlusNet using a MAC will be on the same day, usually no more than a couple of hours downtime.
PlusNet is a vastly better deal than Virgin National, (£5.99 on a Market 3 exchange) they also offer a line rental and calls package which will be cheaper than Virgin. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If I go to plusnet will they give me cd and modem?
If so, will they give me this before installation?
thank you0 -
Wireless router is free with Plusnet, but they do charge £6.99 for the courier.
Yes, it will normally arrive a couple of days before your migration date (no 'installation' is required).
Unfortunately you've now missed the boat with PlusNet, as the price has gone up to £6.49 for the Value tariff. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thank you for letting me know about plusnet.
I've been to samknows, but I cannot find the link which helps me find the best company for me.
please could some one point me in the right direction.
thank you0 -
samknows provides exchange-specific info relating to broadband-it does not link you to 'the best company'-which would anyway depends on other personal factors.
If you post a link to your samknows exchange search results (or just say what exchange you are on) then someone can advise you further.
What you are looking for are your LLU options. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
