Actimel subsitutes

I'm not really bothered by the brand names - I know all these little pots of digestive goodness contain special branded versions of bacteria (I can see the yogurt scientists now, nanoscopic brands stamping each individual bacteria - THATS why it costs so much! :D) but is there a cheap and easy way to make these little pots of runny yogurt?

I always thought it was just watered down live yogurt:rolleyes:

I heard a doctor say that these drinks are totally unecessary unless you had a specific digestive problem.

Could you not buy (or make) yogurt and thin it with fruit juice/ water or more milk ?

Quite possibly if it'll have the same effect! And yes, I do have a specific digestive problem = )

  • On bbc news last week a specialist was on there saying they made no difference at all unless you had stomach/bowel problems and neede a top up of live bacteria.
You could make your own yoghurt and flavour it with jelly or fruit.
If you really want to keep taking them try somewhere like lidl and netto that do different or foreign versions that are cheaper.
    Hope that helps!
  • Sorry just see your post, obv. don't know what your prob is - have you tried any elimination diet to see if cutting out a certain food would help? Lidls do a good range of cold foods and things like soya milk etc, I'm sure they would have a probiotic that would be cheaper.

yes they do have a range of probiotic products, including individual bottles (bigger than the branded ones) & larger bottles, some with fibre. so it's worth a look if you've a branch nearby :)

I've been trying to take out obvious foods but I've noticed very little difference. I enjoy food too much to worry about the occasional bit of discomfort. I have milk daily so it's not going to be that afaik but it may be white bread & pizza bases...

But I lust over it soooo much :- (

Hi. Have you heard of kefir? There's a really good thread about it here. I'm trying to get myself organised and start culturing it, but not got round to it yet.

    Hi tim_n

I would suggest that you have a look out for probiotic supplements eg:

    http://www.zipvit.co.uk/cgi-bin/search.cgi?zs

    or

    http://www.goldshield.co.uk/products-ST01943-SU08/Probiotic-Fibre-Complex.htm

If you are intolerant to cow's milk (which you may well be, lots of people are and don't realise) it'd be crazy and, I expect, counterproductive to consume the yoghurt drinks.

From an MSE viewpoint, supplements are much cheaper than the drinks anyway. There is also the environmental aspects to consider - 365 little bottles a year is quite a lot of unnecessary waste.

Any decent health shop should have an adviser who can talk to you about which brand is the most suitable. They'll have shelves full of them!!
