Recovery Disc Creation

Hi all.

My Dad has got a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista Home Premium, has had it since last May or so, and at the time created a set of recovery discs, which as per you are only allowed to create once.

On Saturday after I came back from work my Dad said something had gone wrong, and I had a look and somehow some spyware had been loaded on and was causing the PC to freeze after exactly 5 mins of use and would often bring up the BSOD.

Tried Windows repair, which didn't work, then tried the Toshiba HDD recovery, which didn't work because again it kept bringing up the BSOD, so in the end I had to restore it with the backup discs he created.

So after my Saturday night was wasted (!!!!!) fixing the laptop, got it back to the original factory state and now it's working fine but doing a lot of Windows Updates.

What seems to have re-appeared however is the prompt box after logging in telling him to create the backup discs. The recovery discs I used to restore the PC were fine (no damaged etc), but does anyone know if they are for one use only, and we have to create more discs? I know it's only for 1 PC (this laptop), but each time you restore with the discs do you need to create a new set afterwards?

TIA, hope you've all got this lovely weather!!

In my experience the number of recoveries to that particular computer are infinate. It will let you do the same thing over and over. I assume it asks for the License Key (usually printed on the barcode below the computer?) In which case it is usually an OEM key and as long as you haven't changed the laptops hardware in any way it is legit.

At my work we have an older Toshi Satellite and the disk has been used a fair few times as we use it as a test laptop.

You shouldn't need to create another set of disks.

The restore has just put it back to the state it was in when it came from the factory - including the prompt to create recovery disks.

The ones you have already will be fine although as always an additional set could save your bacon in the future if the first set get damaged somehow.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

It didn't ask for an OEM key during the re-install, so it may be that the disc will only inherently work for that laptop or laptop model.

If the option is available I might try and create a new set of discs as a just in case the others stop working/are lost.

    Thanks for your help chaps/chapettes!!
