Waiting ages for internet...

Hi there

Recent problem with laptop. When navigating to a new page, the "waiting https:...." takes ages and, often, fails to connect. It's as if the internet drops out (albeit it appears to remain connected as work laptop through a proxy remains connected).

Refreshing the page a couple of times usually does the trick.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

    Need a bit more info

    • Which laptop are you using (personal one?)
    • How are you connecting to the internet, wirelessly?
    • Is this on a home wireless connection, or a work connection (like a VPN)?
    • Have you had any malware / spyware recently?
    • If your using wireless at home, what channel. Have you tried changing it to reduce interference. What security are you using?

You shouldn't be using https:// for basic webpages (like google). I can't recall but I think internet explorer had a setting that said "wait for https before reconnect" may be worth checking that

EDIT - Couldn't find that bit, but trusted sites or dns could be messed up..... I suggest more info :)

The description seems a bit vague before can continue so I'd like to know more.

Hi there. Thanks for replying. Its a Dell Vostro running Vista. Connecting wirelessly.

No knowledge of spyware or malware and Defender is showing all clear. The failure to connect applies to IE, Firefox and Google Chrome.

The "waiting for http" is at the bottom left of the screen.

defender is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

scanning with something like malwarebytes antimalware would give you a better idea if the machine has been infected.

Have you temporarily tried disabling the firewall to see if that causes the problem?

Nope - taken the firewall down and still it's a problem. Another laptop is showing the same.

Reckon a network problem? Or possibly a router issue?

Try going into your internet program and making sure it's setup for "automatically detect network settings"

    Internet Explorer
Tools - Internet Options - Connections - Lan Settings - Auto detect.

    Firefox
    Tools - Options - Advanced - Network - Settings - No Proxy

Apply those settings and try again. If they're already applied, put the network cable into the laptop. If it works straight away with the network cable, I'd say the issue is more to do with your wireless and it probably just needs setting up again.

The problem could also be a faulty hosts file, if the zones are messed up in there it can go funny. Do you have an IP address if you go start - run - ipconfig /all?
