Fair Wear and Tear

We have recently handed the keys back on our rented flat and are in the process of getting our deposit back. The landlord hasn't answered my emails asking if he intends to deduct anything but I wondered what everyone considered fair wear and tear? We lived in the property for 5.5 years.
We obviously didn't trash the place but over the years some plates have been broken and we have lost some cuttlery. Also the covers on the sofas started to fray. Would you consider this acceptable or should be be paying towards replacement.

Broken plates and lost cutlery is a bit off imo. (You could have/should have perhaps replaced them yourselves? Are they listed in detail in the inventory?)
Wear to furniture is ok.
Is the pattern on the plate no longer available?0 -
Its from Argos and they don't sell it anymore. If they want to charge us for the plates and cuttlery I will go and buy some myself I guess. Yes they are listed in the inventory.0

Does it say "pinky greeny pattern called leaf from argos" or "6 plates and matching bowls" ?0

fair wear and tear is about natural deterioration under ordinary usage so it includes things like carpets thinning around doorways, curtains fading through sun damage.
it excludes anything broken by accident or through negligence, stains, dirt or missing items.
a landlord cannot enjoy 'betterment' and must take into account the age and condition of any item.0 -
Poppysarah is right, unless they have been incredibly thorough in the inventory it is likely that you can replace the entire set for less money than you will be charged for the replacement of 1 plate.

Thanks everyone. I didn't really think of it like that but I will go out tomorrow and get a new set of dishes and cuttlery and drop them around to the landlord. Its our first time renting in the UK. At home places arn't furnished so all you have to take care of is the floors and walls.0

Very few places I've ever seen (outside of student digs) have anything more than a cooker, fridge, bed and sofa for furnished.0
