The contract details of the seller when they signed up with Agent A aren't known, but guass are a standard contract for that company.0

Countrywide would have been my second guess!!!

We were in a very similar situation to your friend last year... Made a "cheeky" offer on a house through Agent A and were turned down. The house was also on with Agent B and went under offer through them. This fell through and it came back on the market Agent B only.
We knew the vendors were very unhappy with Agent A and had planned to sack them anyway (we knew this because Agent A forgot to turn up to our first viewing appointment and the vendor took us round herself, saying it wasn't the first time this had happened and they didn't want to deal with them anymore). We would also much have preferred Agent B but were tied to Agent A since they'd first introduced us. We got Agent A to call the vendors with our offer and after some negotiations they accepted.
At the end of the day, the vendors want to sell their house and if the offer is right they won't reject it just because they don't like the agent! And your friends' Agent A have nothing to lose by putting the offer forward to the vendors, so I don't see how they could refuse to do this.0
