Faulty DVD in box set

Hello there
I bought an X Files box set for my boyfriend from HMV online in November 2008. He's nearly finished the box set but the last disc is faulty. I wrote to HMV and they said the DVDs were purchased too long ago for them to do anything about it. What are you meant to do when you purchase a box set - check every DVD to make sure they're all working? Really? Not sure where to go with this, so any advice would be hugely appreciated.
Best wishes
Cath

Sorry OP, but I think they are well within their rights to refuse to do anything, 17 months is rather a long time...0

There are something like 50 discs in the box though! I could cry. We'll never find out how it all ends

Thanks for your post

Well the Sales of Goods Act would still apply, but as it is over 6 months old you would have to prove the item is inherently faulty. In order you to prove is inherently faulty, it would be necessary for you to get a engineers report proving it or if you search online see if it is a common problem with that disc.
I suspect you will nor be able to provide proof of an inherent fault and therefore there is nothing you can do. Is anyone selling the disc on ebay so that you can get is cheaply?0 -
I was just looking at eBay, OD! And thanks for the tip on searching to see if anyone else has experienced the faulty disc - THEY DO! (but i can't post the link)
Do I have a case now? Please say I do!0 -

I very much doubt it, one case does not make it an inherent fault, you would need a significant percentage of box sets sold to all be faulty in the same way for this to occurAlways ask ACAS0
