"Service" is subjective - on here you'll see some very happy customers and some very unhappy customers of all of the companies.

"Price" is a little harder to factor in - it really does depend on how much you use! The average consumption in the UK is 20,500kWh for gas and 3,300kWh for electricity, but you might use a lot more or a lot less than that - and that can have a really big affect on the price. My advice is to consider an Online tariff when you get your Internet hooked up, as these tend to be the most competitive (you view the bills online instead of in the post) and get yourself on a direct debit.

Take a meter reading the very second you walk in through the door and make many, many copies of it so you can find it if need be in the future. Give this to the current supplier. You may have one supplier for both gas and electricity, or you may have one for each. Any of the big 6 will be able to tell you who your supplier is if you phone them. If you want to move supplier, you must first register your details with the current supplier. Then, you can begin to switch straight away. It'll take 4-6 weeks (and remember to provide the new company with your meter readings, which you've made many, many copies of also, on your supply start date).

If you ever see an estimated meter reading, provide an accurate one. It's very likely you'll be under- or overestimated at first. If you notice your direct debit is not covering you usage, increase it.

When you get your first bill, compare the meter serial number printed on the bills, They should match. If they do - fantastic! You're not paying for next doors electric. If they don't, contact the supplier with the correct details.

That is a run down of 99% of the posts on here! :) Congratulations on your new house purchase, we're going to be neighbours haha.
