Painting...

Hi All,
I am just doing up my flat and was about to re paint the whole flat, I thought a 5litre tin would be enough for each room, but a friend said this would not be enough as it needs about 3 coats. Does that sound right as I was going to paint it soon and did not really want to run out of paint or be stuck with a extra tin which I did not need???

5 ltrs is an average tin per room. some rooms will need double that.
most/all shops will let you return unused paint/wallpaper. within a reasonable time.
BQ = 28 days?
changing colors will obviously use more paint. esp dark to light colors.
another reason to paint the whole house in the same color!Get some gorm.0 -
It can also depend on what paint you are using.
Last year I painted a room with wickes trade emulsion magnolia, was bought by the home owner, after the 5th coat and you could still see through it we took it back and got a refund, apparently they had been getting a few complaints. Don't know if the new add by them going on about their 'new formula' has anything to do with this?
It also has a lot to do with the condition of the walls, what are you painting over, old paint will be porous and may take more paint to cover, as will already mentioned, darker colours.
Stuff like nicotine on the walls can also be a nightmare to paint over and may need a barrier coat
If you are doing the flat, buy 1 can and suck it and see, you can then guestimate the rest. Buy the best quality that you can afford and shop around as everyone has their discounts at the moment.
Hope this helps0 -
Personally I tend to buy 2.5L tins as the price of two is not that different from a 5L tin and you can then take a tin back if you don't end up using it.
FYI I just painted a living room 17 feet by 12 feet and used just under 3 2.5L tins to do 2 coats. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -

It's making me reach just thinking of the last time, the stink!
Still didn't work though, bloody stuff still bleeds through, the tar soaks into the walls then gets drawn out by the emulsion.
You wash it and wash it but as soon as you chuck up some paint you see it discolouring, nowt you can do about it then but barrier it off with some oil based primer or barrier coat, which can get expensive.
This is why landlords don't want smokers in their houses anymore, don't blame them on this one mind.0
