Claiming Redundancy when registered as self employed

I have recently been made redundant and have decided to go freelance. I've set myself up as a limited conmpany but am not sure how successful the venture will be. All the time no business comes in can I claim JSA (and on my mortgage protection scheme) even though I am registered as a company owner?

It is unlikely, however you may be able to claim Tax Credits.

How many hours are you working?

Are you over 25?

Do you have a partner and/ or children?

To claim JSA you have to agree to look for a job and if you are putting all your energies into a new business then you will not be able to do that.If you want to claim off your policy then you will probably need proof such as from DWP that you are claiming JSA. You are probably better off claiming JSA and agreeing to look for a job but you may also be able to get free advice about setting up a business and satisfy both DWP and your insurance company.

If you have already set up the compnay and have some earning then you may be able to get help with rent, council tax and possibly tax credits. If you are earning but quite a small amount you can still get JSA although there is only a £5 per week disregard
