Digital photoframe question

I'd be grateful for any technical advice on the following bitty problem:

My dad is due to visit an elderly relative abroad in May. She has poor vision and he has had the idea of taking a lot of family photos to show her on the new Jessops digital pictureframe he was given for Christmas.

Some of the photos he wants to show are very old, black and white jobs from the 40s and 50s.

My brother, who lives 200 miles away, has said he can scan these into his pc and then send them to me (I have no scanner) via email. I could then transfer them to the photo frame from my pc.

Am just wondering whether there is any potential problem here as time is getting shorter and I don't want to start sending these old photos through the post to my brother if the whole thing is a non starter for some reason.

I wouldn't commit anything like this to the post, not all in one parcel, anyways.

Scanners aren't that expensive. You have a PC. Go buy a scanner!
  • If you can't afford £40 for a cheap flatbed scanner, can't you borrow a scanner / printer from a friend for a day or so. A bog standard USB flatbed will do the job and any reluctance to lend you even an expensive all-in-one should dissolve when you tell your friend that you will not be using any ink !

BTW, ' googler's ' point is on the button, no amount of money in the world can replace missing photographs, you will never be forgiven for putting them at risk !

Wouldn't recommend taking a photo of an old photo, the quality would be poor enough without losing even more quality as you would do by doing that. You definitely either need a scanner to do it yourself or send the pics special delivery to your brother who can do it for you. OR, ring around the local computer shops - preferably try ones with a cybercafe section - and ask if they have a scanner, not all do, but some do have scanners and they'll do the scanning for you for a small fee, they should be able to load them onto the photo frame for you if you take it, and all the cables, along with you. That should work out a lot cheaper than 2x special delivery postage for there and back and its safer.

Most libraries have free computer access, usually including use of a scanner. You could scan the photos there, save to a usb stick, and load to your pc to work on them, or to the frame if you just want them as they are. You may have to book use of the scanner, but it should not cost anything.
