Joint & Personal Accounts

Hi All,

Not sure where to post this. I have a joint account with my dad and this morning i have checked my own account and they have transfered £100 to the joinmt without my permisson. Can they do this legally. As i was told that they would not touch my personal account without my say so.

Can someone let me know where i stand cause it has taken me up to my over draft limit and now i have no funds! Im so angry at my dad and the bank.

Why have they transferred the money ? If it is to set off a debt on the joint account then yes they can do this. They cannot do it the other way though. The way to avoid this is to have accounts with seperte banking organisations.

As molerat said. If the joint account was overdrawn (unauthorised) and the bank had not been able to arrange for this to be repaid, they can take money from your account to make good (this is called offsetting).

In any event, contacting your bank should be the first thing to do to find out what they have done.
