Okaaaaay. How did the 7-up come to bounce down the stairs? Did the squirrels push it? Or was it a poltergeist?

  • Today I googled 'strange noises from roof' because what happened at my house last night is a mystery and I wanted to see if I could find any possible explanations and came upon goldbyrons post. It sounds very familiar to my experience (but without the diet 7 up!)

Last night at 12am just as I was about to turn out my light for bed there was a 'bang bang' that seemed to come from my roof. It scared the life out of me and I ran down to my Fiancee in fear. We still cant explain what the noise was.

My house is a terraced house. 3 rooms downstairs, 3 rooms upstairs. My back bedroom is an extension so unlike the rest of the house, has a flat roof. There is no attic space above my bedroom. There is only one neighbour joined to the back bedroom, they had the same extension built. My other neighbours house is not extended so their house ends where my bedroom door is.

It was not the neighbours because one is away on holiday (and I checked, their house was still secure!!) and the other neighbours sleep at the front of their house. Anyway the noise came from above, not from the side. There was no sign of anyone outside, we shone torches out the windows into the front and back gardens. and we heard no other noise to indicate someone/something moving over the roof. I hear the birds on the roof every morning and the noise I heard last night was about 10 times louder than the birds I hear all the time. It sounded like the chimney had fallen. Or tiles had fallen off the sloped roof of the main house but I inspected it today in full daylight and my main roof and chimney are in tact. No sign of damage to my flat roof either. Although I have some plants growing in my guttering that need sorting......

The only way I can describe it is like someone who is really annoyed banging on your door , except it was the roof. Just to give an idea of how loud it was, my fiancee was downstairs in the front room which is the opposite end of the house from where I was (and on the floor below) and he thought someone was knocking at the door.

I have so far been given one plausable theory (unless my extension is in fact about to fall down after 10 years!) and that is because I live right under a flight path near to East Midlands Airport, it was something such as liquid that fell from a plane (like water from the wing) Loud enough to make a bang on impact but not enough to leave damage. And by morning of course it would be dry. Am open to suggestions, except Squirrels watching Strictly. Now if they were watching Britains Got Talent, that might be plausable.

It might just be the timbers contracting during the heat of the day and expanding when they cool down in the evening. It gets very hot in an unventilated attic.

I've been puzzled by mysterious knocking on a couple of occasions. Once it was a large bird (a rook I think) that was tap tap tapping on the ridge tiles early one morning. Quite repetitive, but this event only occurred once. We did have a strange (loud) tap tap tapping noise (about 6 to 10 strikes) that woke us in the middle of the night on several occasions. It was a mystery for a long time but eventually identified as the shower head dropping water onto the shower tray which appeared to act like a drum (only occurred after a lateish evening shower). I'm sure your issue will have a reasonable explanation. You will discover it eventually, so keep us informed.

Have you checked to see if there's any lead left?
