To old for a paper round?

You're not too old at all! I'm 29 and last summer took on two rounds of delivering the local free paper once a week for a bit of extra cash. Took me probably around 3 or 4 hours of walking for both rounds (which I classed as free exercise
), plus time spent to shove the leaflets in the papers (which I didn't mind as could mindlessly do it in front of the tv).
From memory I think it worked out around £65 a month in total for the two rounds - I probably could have done it quicker with a car, but landed up taking a walking trolley thing, and going home a couple of times to pick up extra papers.
Strangely enough, I enjoyed it! Although I only did it in the summer, and in the end I needed the time more than the money so stopped. Definitely something I'd consider again though if necessary, I've done far worse jobs...

Each to their own on this I guess. I'm betting that the work took around 6 hours a week (including time putting the leaflets in the papers). £65 per month for, say, 6 hours per week. So - maybe 27 hours to earn that £65. That would boil down roughly to less than £3 per hour (ie you'd be lucky to get half National Minimum Wage).

To the O.P. - you could ask how long a paper-round took and divide that up into an hourly rate to see how much they proposed to pay per hour. If it seemed possible - then try it for one week (timing every bit of the work - including putting any leaflets in the papers) and see how much you had actually earned per hour. My guess is that you would find the rate of pay has been put at pocket money levels - as they expect schoolchildren to be the ones doing it and are paying accordingly. Bearing in mind as well that the round may be at antisocial hours and, all round, I expect it's not worth your while to do it.0 -
Wow thanks for all the replies!

Glad to hear my age shouldnt go against me, I actually thought it might do in terms of pay - as in they would have to pay me a minimum amount because im over 18 - but I guess thats not the case lol!
I didnt expect it to pay very much but as I enjoy walking with my ipod and like you say its good exercise, I dont see it as a taxing job. I did my round for 4 years as a teen and by the end did my whole round in an hour (cant remember how many papers I delivered though)
Plus with the weather starting to improve it should be rather pleasent
I think ill give the local papers a call and see what they say and what the basic pay is then go from there - doesnt hurt to ask
Thanks again0 -
Oh just wondering - do you still get payed by way of cash in a little brown envelope shoved through the letter box? I remember how very exciting it was to hear the clink of coins landing on my doormat

I just started doing 2 paper rounds last friday doing the local free paper and I'm 21. They now pay the money directly into the bank and you also get a wage slip. Got my first pay today works out at just under £10  a round but thats with no leaflets0 -
Choon, after a while, see if you can do more rounds! It might only be another hour of work while you double your wages!
I started with 200 every thursday, then 400, then 600:)
I personally hated getting leaflets- felt it wasn't worth getting paid 1p a leaflet for 5 houses!"No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:0 -

I'm currently doing 404 papers a week, I was certainly thinking of asking for another round as she said they can't get the people round here at the moment0 -
