fuse box

Hi I am new here and am looking for some advice. I am in the process of buying a new (old) cottage which has a fuse box that looks older than me! As I am new I can't post links or a picture so I will describe as best I can. We are in Scotland, not sure if thisis important or not. Really looking for advice on what I should be asking electricians for when they come out, def. need to get the fuse box changed as I wouldn't know how to use it!! Owner said electrics were upgraded but will need to get this checked out as well.

Ok what I see...

There is the meter surrounded by 3 black boxes, none of which are all that big, coming from the meter there are two red, one black and one grey wire. A black and red wire goes to one black box and the other red and grey go to the other black box there is also a green wire going between the boxes and a green and yellow wire going up out of the boxes and a thicker grey cable that appears to be coming down into a black box.

Thanks for any help or advice
:)

  • Hi
    Where in Scotland are you?
    What type of heating is there (oil, gas, lpg, or electrc)?

    Some companies advertise they are regsitered, so check it out on the website links below even if they say they are.

    You should use a competent person for the work, links below
    In Scotland:
    Individuals registered;

    Companies

    There is NO part P in Soctland, so ignore any stuff you see on this.

    SELECT are the main regulatory body up here , the NICIEC also have people in Soctland, but SELECT are more local (based in Edinburgh, so will understand your accent)

    SELECT contractor find page Call SELECT on 0131 445 5577 and ask them for details of a couple of contractors in your area

    NICIEC contractor find page The NICIEC have an 0870 number on the site, so it will cost to call.

    Hi Ormus, two of the boxes look like the box at the top of the picture and the box with the red, grey, green and yellow and green cables looks slightly different from them, from what I can see in the picture that I took, there is no light under the stairs so it was camera flash to see anything, there is an old fuse sitting on top, brass coloured ends and light coloured tube. Not sure if this is anything to do with these boxes, sorry.
