Help with front garden

Really could do with some advice on our front garden, it is huge and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with it. I'll try to describe it the best I can, if you stand on the street, firstly there is the hedge, patchy in areas, but tidy, it is about 20-25 ft long, then there is grass, but the part next to the hedge is on a very steep slope, making it extremely hard to cut, then there is a flatter piece of grass, then it gets gradually smaller and smaller until it is only about 5 ft wide, so it is a sort of triangle shape, hope that makes sense. What I would like to do is take away the grass on the slope, and plant something? or put down bark or stones, anything so I don't have to cut that area as I'm forever getting stuck down the bottom with the lawnmower and as it's a petrol one, it's a nightmare to lift. I would also like to do something with the large flat patch of grass, that gets the sun all day, I say flat but it's full of holes, ideally I would like to take away some of the grass to plant some nice plants but don't have a clue? Any advice would be greatly apppreciated!

The choice for the slope by the hedge is limited: bergenia, vinca, cotaneaster, geranium, ajuga and euonymus should all cope with the dry shade. I'd plant them through a weed-suppressing membrane to help conserve moisture and cover with bark.

For the main area, I'd get rid of all the grass and plant as for a dry garden, so gravel the lot and plant through with Mediterranean style planting scheme.

    Any chance of a pic?

How much sun does the slop get? Slopes provide good drainage and frost protection that benefits of lot of the borderline hardy plants that don't like sitting in damp soil. A lot of the Mediterranean herbs will like it there.
