Hi all,
I'm wanting to cook a whole chicken on my BBQ today and wondered what you think is the best way?
Should I somehow flatten it out to make it cook easier? Also, should I do it in the oven for a little while first? If so, how long?
Any advice appreciated

Spatchcockthat's what I'd do
Take a look at this link; there's a link from that showing how :T
Not sure about using the oven first - just make sure it's cooked all the way through. Enjoy

What about if I cook for about 40mins in the oven then move to the bbq? Or will it need longer?
That's likely to be more dangerous than cooking it all at once in one place. As long as it is all cooked through (i.e. no pink bits) before you eat it, it will be fine spatchcocked on the BBQI am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Really? That's surprising and interesting.... Why would it be more dangerous?
I also wondered if anyone has any recommendations for ingredients to rub onto the chicken before bbqing ?

Because after 40 minutes, it's not cooked through properly so probably won't be up to the correct temp to kill the bugs but will be warm enough for them to multiply. Some heat will also be lost as it's transferred to the BBQ so it'll take longer to get back to that ideal bug killing temp and may look cooked through before it actually is.
Just my rambling thoughts...I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Do a search for 'beer can chicken' - an interesting way to cook chicken on the BBQ. I haven't tried it, but it looks good!
Also, if your BBQ has a lid, put it on for much of the cooking, and leave it on!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
We used to have one of the large Weber kettle barbecues, the turkey was cooked in it every christmas and we're all here to tell the tale.
Long slow cooking should do the trick. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
If you have a deep BBQ, you could do it almost like a jacket potato, wrap in foil and bung it amongst the burning charcoal.. Or is it only me and my friends that have roaring, flaming BBQs that get stoked and kept up for hours on end?!0

get a Rotigril rotisserie BBQ- they are amazing!!!!
charcoal and battery powered, very small, and it rotates the chicken so its very healthy as it boils fat off but keeps chicken moist. you just turn it on and leave it for 90 minutes or so, best chicken i ever tasted.
once cooked you just spread the small amount of ash left on flower bed (its a fertilizer).
i had to order mine online- think it was about 100 quid0
