USB DVD Player Problem - Please HELP

Apologies, if you think this is a silly question
I have Philips USB DVD Player[DVP3260]. I am unable to view some video files I have downloaded recently.
Though they were .avi format, I was told it might be related to the codec the file has..
Looking at the manual the codec [mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC] is not supported by the player. Is there any way I can get this playing?
On the Philips web site I can see some firmware update.........
My question is updating the firmware would help playing those files?

well got 2 choices here
update the firmware may have added the codec if your lucky (usually there would be notes what the new firmware adds/does.
don't still stuffed
other option is get a re encode engine software and change from avi to something that is does recognise!
also need to know which version you have to get right info
