DFS Sofa ....how to get into first floor flat!?

  • I used to work for an independent delivery company a few years ago, and in general modern houses, "Town Houses" and older terraced houses can be a nightmare to get stuff in to.
Everything is so much larger nowadays, it looks great in the shop but once home it is OMG  It is HUGE now!

We were I think pretty good at what we did and arrived tooled up to take off doors and had slings and stuff to shift heavier objects around but were often defeated.

Sofas can be "spun" into doorways with a top in first and then let it fall a bit and continue turning the thing about the narrow area at the end of the arms - start of the back, depending on the design. We used to put them in "body bags" to stop damage but it was a learned skill.

The other problem is stairs, a lot of houses have winders or quarter turns and the simple maths dictate the maximum size the can go up them, both length and width play a part, what goes up will hit the ceiling before it gets level and once level it will have to turn a corner. Regardless of what it says Matresses do bend and squish ;) but it isn't very professional at all.

In extremis we have booked a forklift and had windows taken out, this is usually easier on new build sites where the builders are still in situ.

The biggest issue was always the "Narrow Hall Syndrome" If you cannot turn the item then it will not go through the opening to the living room, either way. Forward and in or past it and reverse in with the door off. it is very frustrating for the buyer and us delivery bods. we usually managed to get it all through the window in these cases.

Some 3 floor town houses were a nightmare and we learned the designed and used to advise accordingly before the customer booked a delivery.

    So in brief.
To the op - It depends on the circumstances,
    I cannot help more.

You could consider buying a sofa that comes in sections that you assemble at home. www.nabru.co.uk get good reviews, and they claim their sofas are stronger than standard DFS type ones.
I'm going to be ordering mine from them in a few weeks.

I wonder what the outcome of this sofa story was?

My daughter has ordered two sofas from DFS and lives in a second floor flat and they are coming next week. We couldn't get the old sofa out without chopping it up, so are now worrying about DFS getting the new ones in.

When she ordered it, the salesman said they would try everything to get the sofas in and not to worry....Ah well, we will see.

On a good note for DFS, my family has bought 6 sofas between us in the last 8 years and have been very pleased with them, especially considering the price we paid for them.

Fingers crossed for next week everyone, please.

Just to say that the sofas were delivered on Friday to the second floor flat and the dfs men were magnificent.

It was obviously a hard job for them, but by taking the arms off the sofa bed, they managed to get it in the flat.

They were on time, very pleasant and helpful and did a great job. And the sofas look lovely.

    Well done dfs.
