I am not sure I wouldn't have incurred a credit check for the upgrade, which is definitively something I don't want (I would rather save a hit on the credit file for a 0% credit card or a mobile).

Info only as you've solved the problem ... but there is no credit check involved in upgrading an existing Halifax current account. Just a very confusing application if you do it from distance .. or a very simple signature if you go into Branch

I don't need it this time, but I have re-routed my salary through a switching service in the past. Our accountant just came around my desk to ask for confirmation before going ahead.

That's similar to, say, applying for a Mortgage and giving permission to approach your employer for salary data. But I was conjuring with the fact it's supposed to be wholly seamless to do this transfer. And I don't quite see it that way when your employer then has to confirm acceptance with you? Just as easy to cut out the middleman and pass the new data direct to your employer? But the DD thing is definitely less painful - provided it works;)

    Wholly agreed on everything.
And yes, it's mainly about the DDs - salary being a one-off condition.
