Domestic CCTV Advice, Please

I live in SW Scotland in a terraced house. There is a problem of car vandalism and, with the approval of neighbours, I decided to install CCTV at the front and rear. However, the police advised this morning that domestic CCTV on a 'public highway' is inadmissable in law, and that even if it identified one or more people committing a criminal act the police are not allowed to act on CCTV evidence.
Does any one know if this is correct, plese? Is there anyway round this?
Many thanks, David

Its better than having nothing at all...
The Police just want any excuse to sit on their backsides.
Why dont they put up some of those stupid signs that they cable tie to lamp posts saying "car thieves operate in this area"Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

I wonder of which end of his/her body the officer was speaking, unless of course the laws are that different between Scotland and England.
We have 4 CCTV cameras around our property, 2 on the front. As one of the cameras are facing the public highway legaly we have to display a sign advising people of 'video recording in progress' we have a business card size sign in the bottom corner of the lounge window (bold red text) which is all in law you need.
The only issue we have is THE POLICE......Once they know you have CCTV at least once every 3 months or so they knock asking if our cameras caught an incident that occurred.
I am aware what is not inadmissable, and that is any recorded evidence that is not dated & time stamped.0 -
My best advice for all round info for your problem is to talk to Doktor Jon from the nfh forum. Dedicated section to cctv and to Scotland

Legally? Where does it say this? looking for solid references to back this statement up. (and are you refering to Scotland or England and Wales?).
Filming a public place is perfectly legal (ask any clued up photographer etc).
As for if it's admissible or not, let a judge decide that, not the Police. As mentioned here the Police also go around knocking on doors checking if certain incidents were caught on camera, myself and other people I know have also been asked.0
