Propagating Celeriac

Was at HomeBase today and done a spot buy of some young Celeriac plants. Now I'm reasonably sure of how to grown them: it's always easy to look up on the net anyway. However, I am wondering whether or not you can propagate Celeriac from the little green shoots that you get at the top of the plant. And if so how would I go about it?

This is my first time with this particular veg so if the questions sounds silly apologies in advance but I know my moneysaving colleagues won't let me down. :D

I'm fairly certain you cannot, but only ever grown from seed. Maybe someone knows better?

I'm also pretty certain that you won't be able to propagate plants from celeriac leaf cuttings, but I'm a great believer in experimenting to try and push out the boundaries of growing things. Last year I grew some tomato plants from sideshoots and also from the top of two tomato plants which got snapped off by squirrels. Both experiments produced plants which cropped satisfactorily. I simply popped them into compost and kept it moist and they all rooted. The top of basil shoots will generate roots if left in water for a few days which become new plants, so you could try snipping off some celeriac leaves in the same way, leaving them in water for a week (change daily) to see if any leaves develop, and if they do, plant them out.

I've only ever grown celeriac from seed so have no idea if this will work. You might find that you perhaps get a growing plant, but one which won't develop a bulb. Come back on here and report back. . I've still got a few celeriac bulbs growing in my garden. It never occurred to me to try this so if I've got time, I might have a go myself.

Slug food........they love celeriac, I've tried 3 years without one celeriac root to show for it. the best I've managed is a few leaves for flavouring.

Good Luck!, but suggest you sow from seed each year, easy to germiante and much cheaper in the long run.
