cost of painter and decorator

Sorry if this has already been asked somewhere - had a look but no joy! I am moving into a three bedroomed house which needs totally redecorated. I can do this myself but won't really have time....can anyone give me a very rough estimate of what it will cost me to have it done for me - I would provide the paint and paper... thanks

It really depends on the quality of job you want done. A client of mine paid £1200 to have 3 reception rooms done (2 large and one average size). They did a first class job. Absolutely no corners were cut. The whole job was done by the book. She supplied the paint.

On the other side of the coin, there are firms around my area that claim to be able to do a house for £500. I've never seen their work, or if I have they don't claim it to be theirs.

Doesn't it also depend on location? I live in an affluent part of Hants and would expect to pay more than some poor area of the UK. However I anaged to finf a small man by recommendation who is good and reasonable. I;d advise trying for recommdations of such a person.
  • I live in the Cardiff area and have paid around £100/£110 per day for a quality decorator excluding paint and he did a fabulous job.

I had some painting and decorating done earlier this year and in London I paid £150 a day and paid them extra for supplies. They went to the shops and bought it themselves. I got 2 Polish guys for this price.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
  • No stripping of old paper - but papering of walls and ceilings, painting woodwork (though not window frames) - not much prep on walls,I don't think. Oh and I live in rural Scotland!

im afraid to say that there is no way of getting prices for jobs like this online.
Get 2-3 diff firms/people in and tell them exactly what you want done. Go for one that gives totall cost rather than by the day. agree this in writing and both sign it ( if they dont want to then I wonder why that might be). Make sure you know what your getting in the price.

Are you supplying the paint ? (it is advisable to meet the decorator at the shop or ask his recomendation )

There are always so many people complaining that they have been shafted on this site by Those in the trade. You have the ability to learn from there mistakes. The key to any Job that involves your personal property is communication. remeber it is his living so he might seem to take a little longer over the job than yourself he doesnt want the bad press.

You can ask friends neighbours or even go to the local trade store ( not b&q or that ilk) the private ones and ask them to give you a few names.

If you supply the paint/materials, i give no advise other than get dulux trade. You are paying a mark up on the supplied materials for the time i take to get it and the knowledge and skill in knowing what and how much to get.

Some customers come back with something other than dulux trade (and normally not enough) and it takes more coats, therefore taking longer etc.

All in all, i avoid customers who supply the materials. More hassle than its worth
