please could someone tell me how the paying for items for work ie boots ,wellington boots, trowel ,rubber gloves , wet gear etc all items needed that the employer does not supply as ive read it you take that amount out of your yearly employed earnings is this correct ??

If you are in a union get them to chase up an extra tax allowance for you! This can be done to cover costs for laundry etc and is usually given company wide! Are you registered as self employed?
If not then work expenses are not allowed as deductions from gross salary. If you are SE then surely this should have all been done on your tax return?
You just give tax credits a figure. If your P60 information matches it then all is fine, if not then you will probably end up with a large overpayment.
Basically tell them whatever it states on your P60 or your last pay statement prior to April 6th 20100 -
it says expenses you have to pay out and that your employer does not pay back. so you might be able to claim...0

Money you had to pay out to do your job and which your employer didn't pay back to you. Include travel costs, but not the cost of getting to and from work.0 -
Yep kurjam is right. I've just got the renewals booklet out to try and help someone else and in the workings page for people who are employed there is the list of how to work out all your earnings. Underneath it, it has the deductions section which includes:
Work expenses you have paid out and that your employer has not paid you back. The expenses must be wholly, exclusively and necessarily (I'm guessing them meant necessary) in the performance of your duties.
That extract was from the HMRC Renewing your tax credits - Getting it right notes - for use from 6 April 2010 (Step c - page 11 - working sheet)
From what you've said I think that would apply to your husbands position cidergirl. Deduct away!
