Wow! I'm so overwhelmed with the incredibly helpful responses!!!

I rushed to Tesco last night and bought two big bags of veg for 70p each, reduced from £2 each. They had swede, carrot, leek, onions and parsnips in. I've made a massive vegetable curry (and added lentils in) and a big vegetable casserole. Then I used the rest of the veg to make a spaghetti bolognese with one lot of the mince.

I was given a big gammon so I just boiled that in coke (someone told me to do this) and apparently I can use the liquor left to make a bean soup.

I also got some really cheap stock cubes 10p and 19p for a pack - I had no idea the value range was so darn cheap!

oh and I got two extra swedes for 29p each and am going to steam and then mash for the freezer.

I haven't had a chance to go through everything yet, but am definitely going to make some soda bread and try a lot of the suggestions.

I'm just off to tescos for 3pm to see if they have reduced chicken or fish as I know they do knock tons off just before they close on Sundays.

I'm feeling so positive about this now and all virtuous and thrifty. I think I may try the month challenge in May and see how much extra money we have left over!

I'll come back and thank everyone once I have been to tescos.

    :D

    :) thank you!

I just got back from Tesco and managed to get two chickens for a fiver, so will freeze one and cook the other today.

The fish guy was AMAZING, I asked what time he put down the prices and he said now, what do you want? I said I wanted to grab some fish for my kids and he said he could bring down the price of some pacific cod loin - he took it down by 50% from £14 to £7 for nearly a kg of it - I said I couldn't afford that much so he reduced it to £4!

Now I need a recipe for white fish that I can freeze! Does anyone have any ideas? I've never frozen fish before and am a bit nervous!

I have now spent the majority of what we had left - buying lentils and veg and have enough left for the tops ups of milk.

I will try and make up my menu for the month later today after I've cooked the spag bol and made the swede mash and figured out what to do with the fish!

    :D

    I feel like I've run a marathon!

    So far today I've cooked:

    Vegetable Curry 3 portions
    Vegetable casserole 1 portion
    Bolognese sauce 5/6 portions
Coca cola Gammon - 2 meals
    Mashed swede - 2 portions

then hubby just got stewing steak for 2 quid, so

    Beef casserole 3 portions
Roast chicken (to do rubber chicken with, having the roast tonight)
    Mashed potato

and I've yet to do the fish pie and my tuna pasta for tomorrow at work.

Will have a look on here for a fish pie recipe cos I've never made one before! :)

    Hi :)

You are doing amazingly well :T For soda bread I always use this recipe from the Gorcery Challange thread. It doesn't need any buttermilk or anything else that may be more expensive than your budget allows at the moment. We love a big hunk of it for lunch with some hm soup. It's also worth a look through the list of recipes on the Grocery Challenge thread (starting at post 4) as there's some brilliantly inventive recipes that are tried & tested by many, many money savers :money:

    Hope this helps
