New Current Account

As there any consensus as to which is the best current account available at the moment. I was thinking of the Lloydstsb account which gets loads of mentions on the savings and investment forum.
What I want is an account preferably with cheque book, no overdraft required, online or branch. Another one that caught my eye recently is the new Halifax account.

It depends what you want really. A&L is the best if you want interest (currently 5% but might be raising to 6 % in September).
If you are planning to travel overseas then Nationwide is good as their debit card doesnt attract fees overseas.
LLoyds is an 'OK' account but has a good linked regular saver account.0 -
I'd also be interested what people's thoughts are on Lloyds TSB as after 13 years I've had enough of HSBC they are not as good as they used to be and are getting more and more interested in cutting costs and incresing profits...0

I'm a Halifax customer. The account to which you refer is the market leader, in terms of interest (5.00 gross, 5.12 AER, providing you meet the £1000 per month requirement. This rate is paid on the first £2500.)
Larger branches have a separate information desk, so you don't have to queue to speak to a cashier about queries and online services are good. The Helpdesk 0845 phone number is a source of irritation for some. I avoid it.If you are planning to travel overseas then Nationwide is good as their debit card doesnt attract fees overseas.
I have a NW FLEXACCOUNT for the same reason.
Sorry. No recent experience of Lloydstsb.
For 5.1% interest on balances up to £250,000, don't overlook the Coventry Building Society’s First account. Once again, there's a £1,000 per month requirement. Also, the secure part of the website only supports Internet Explorer.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0
