Gravel size to deter cats

Does anyone have any experience of what size gravel (or other aggregate) could be used for a garden paths that cats wouldn't or couldn't scratch around for a litter tray?

I'm hoping to find a size that is ok to walk on, doesn't go green with algae, and the cats hate.

Is there such a thing?

    Yours as well huh!

I'd love to have shingle or bark chip but would spend my life living in fear of underfoot squashees..

20mm if you have to walk on it

40mm if you don't (but you have to insist it is available at the builders merchant)

Cheers Suzy. Yes I will be walking on them all so it looks like 20mm it is. Is that the pebbly stuff you're thinking of or another type of aggregate?

The shape of the gravel also seems to be a factor - they like the rounded stuff but tend to keep away from the sharper, rougher ones. These also lock together better for walking on.

slate chipping should be quite effective.
