Graduating in July - earning money, dole, and PGCE!

Hey guys,

Hoping you can help me. I'll be graduating in July with a degree in Educational Studies. Got quite a lot of experience (NHS, receptionist, secretarial work, working with children, waitressing, sales assistant), but I'm going to be real real poor until I do my PGCE in September.

Just wondering whether I'd be eligible for dole money?

Or whether (other than me going to temp. agencies, which I'll do), whether you guys have any ideas how I can earn money. How about exam marking (or are those jobs difficult to come by / you need to be a teacher?)

Any other suggestions would be very welcome,

From a very poor student!

As far as I know, no you won't be. If you have been in further ed or training in the past 4 years you are not eligible for JSA.

That can't be right, I know people who finished university last year and are on the dole!

That's not in order to apply for JSA, rather it just means the OP cannot use the online service to apply for his JSA, he'll have to do it via the Job Centre. Non-contribution based JSA is based on household income, not anything else. Though I don't know whether it's claimable when you aren't techinically looking for a new job as you are between two educational courses.

That's the terms for using the online application, not the rules for whether you can claim or not, there are no such restrictions for making a JSA claim over the phone and you can claim JSA over the summer between your two courses if you can't find work.

Well, you have got through university and are going to teach kids - surely you have the initiative to find yourself work for a while :) Why not have a good look on the internet for may be working abroad or the states even at kids camps. I dont think any exams will need marking in August will they? Plenty of call centres want people, lots of temp work out there, just a matter of putting in a bit of research.
  • do you have no aspirations to earn money rather than leech off society?
  • Er yes I do. But in case you haven't realised it is quite difficult to get a job, espescially for a very short period of time, and for some of us this is a bit of a concern... wondering how you're going to actually survive with no money.

    Thank you for everyone's responses.
