DVD Player USB

Hello
I have a Toshiba dvd player which has a USB drive,
It says in manual .....

it only supports FAT format (FAT 12/16/32). It does not support NTFS
The maximum USB flash memory capacity supported is according to the FAT 32 file system specification. It cannot playback files whose file sizes exceed the FAT 32 file system specification.

Can someone help me to decifer this? Just that i want to know what kind of memory stick to buy (IF there is any difference) and sizewise?

Thankyou

  • I mite be wong here but i think memory sticks come as ntfs but you can format them for FAT, as my ps3 only reads Fat and i brout a memory stick that wasnt sony and had to reformat it, i got the instructions online, bit long winded but it worked and now my ps3 reads it. It would have read a sony one straight from the shop, coz it reads the other sony one I have, which maybe the case with toshiba but im not sure if you can buy toshiba sticks. Sorry bout the size info I cant help, hopfully someone will come along who will!!

Most USB drives come formated as FAT but can easily be changed to NTFS.
Whilst NTFS has some security advantages in terms of file ownership permissions (or disadvantages as some would say), it is predominantly later Windows systems that read it. Many of the consumer type devices may *not* support it.

The most obvious limitiation is file size:
NTFS can support single files bigger than 4gb each.
    FAT32 cannot.

If you have a DVD image file of 4.7gb that you wish to store on a FAT32 drive, it won't happen as it's too big. You'll need to use NTFS (or possibly one of the other files systems like ext3/4 or Reiser if you're a real geek).

That said a FAT32 formatted drive can support terrabytes of data, it's just the maximum size of a single file that is limited to 4gb.

If you are using the DVD player USB slot to play Xvid/Dixv files (which are usually way smaller than 4gb anyway) stick with FAT as it's less likely to give you permission based issues on the hardware device.

You don't need to look for anything. Whichever usb stick you buy you can format it it FAT, NTFS or whichever you like. It doesn't matter what state it arrives in from the shop.
