Redundant after finished apprenticeship

My son (nearly 20) has been working since leaving school at an engineering company it was supposed to be a 4 yr apprenticeship but he had finished his college work and NVQ3 early - would have been there 4 yrs in aug. He went into work this week and his supervisor told him his certificates for his course should be in the post to him and now they could not keep him on as there is no work for him......so he would be paid for the next 3 weeks but could leave straight away.
He went to JC yesterday - no work that would use the skills he has been studying for they have given him appointment for thurs to speak to an advisor.
He has about £1000 in savings - will he be entitiled to JSA - he lives at home - also if he will be able to get it will he have to wait until he has stopped getting paid for the next 3 weeks - not getting it in lump sum?
Where is the best place for him to get some advice about sorting out a CV for himself?

As he's been paying NI he will receive contributions based JSA (£51.85/week at his age, paid fortnightly) regardless of his savings.
It won't start until after his 3 weeks pay in lieu of notice finishes, that would be the case even if it was paid as a lump sum0 -
Thanks for that Andy - we have luckily never been in this situation before and its all new to us...........your reply much appreciated.0

Get him to ask in the job centre about the CV issue. You want to find out if there is a job club or support service locally. He could also ask his current employer's HR dept if someone could spend an hour with him going through his CV - they might be willing to help?Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Years ago, it was quite common in some industries, to fire the apprentices when they had finished their time and then start a new lot of apprentices from the school leavers.

Yes that happened to my husband - he is 47 so was quite a few years ago!! He took his CV round to quite a few companies in our area and was offered a job where he got some experience and then moved to a bigger company to further his career - however jobs are now very few and far between and the vast majority of comapnies are out of business now. We have told our son that handing round his CV would do no harm and we are just trying to stay optimistic! By the way - the company he has been working for has taken on another apprentice this year.............0
