Hi, i am trying to start up a property maintenance business, i have a small client base at present my website is up and running,i was looking at sorting out some advertising locally, however i had a bit of a set back with this internet directory scam. I received a telephone call off said people giving me the spiel, i asked them to send me some details so i could make a decision one way or the other, 2 weeks later i received an invoice for £390 off them saying i had to pay for a listing that they had put on the net(which i did not ask for) after calling several times i managed to speak to someone who said that someone will call me back, another week passed and no call but i did receive a letter from their debt collection department.i called again and they again told me the department will call back this afternoon. You guessed it, no call, As i did not sign any agreement is this legally binding just from a telephone enquiry that the instigated,
Can any body please help with advice i am worried that it get out of hand and start incurring charges or have to pay them for something that i did not ask for.:(

Write to them asking for signed proof of ordering and if they are unable to provide this, to stop contacting you with immediate effect otherwise you will report them to the police for harrassment. That should sort them.0

"internet directory" do not cost £390 and more likely to be free anyhow. If anyone else gets these type of calls - either in person or via the phone or even emails - ignore it .
Do not give them your address.
If you do want any type of listing use yellow pages or thompson local.0 -
We simply moved our telephone from one premises to another across the road and this seems to have been enough to trigger several cold calls/letters. This includes two letters from Business Internet Directory Ltd at Garforth House in York. I suggest they are not touched with a bargepole. See also separate thread on "Commercial Energy".0

Hi
Having previously been employed by them, here's a little inside info...
Get them to play back the conversation to you. If you agreed to the charge with a clear 'yes' then you'll be able to hear exactly what you agreed to. They record all their call should any such disputes arise.
The calls then go through a strict QC to ensure the guideline provided by Trading Standards are adhered to.
