Santander appear worse than abbey! (re regular payments into my account)

Hi,
I've had a bank account with abbey for years with an overdraft facility of £300, I'm in my overdraft by about halfway but now I'm getting letters through from Santander telling me that I must make regular payments into that account!
I stopped using that account as my main account over a year ago thanks to them charging me however amount in fines for them taking me over my overdraft which I in the end paid back!
Is this legal for them to change the terms and conditions of that account without telling me and sending me this letter from 'collections and recoveries!'
Its cheeky is what it is!!

So you are overdrawn on an account you don't use on a regular basis? No wonder they aren't happy.0

Hmmm well the OP owes them £150, has made no payments to the account in a year, yeah i think they might be !!!!ed.0

I believe Abbey are now part of santander and both are as bad as each other. a similar situation happened to a relative and they are now in talks with FSO because the bank ignored all communication and just kept charging.
just best to avoid these and alliance and leicester who is also santander.0 -

So you took their money, and stopped paying it back and now you are angry because they are sending letters asking you for it?
No doubt they are marking your credit files every month with a nice big red mark of missed payment on the account too for each month you continue to effectively choose to be a numpty.
Which, in my eyes, is a good thing.
Pay the account off and they wont send you any more letters. End of.0 -
It's been a while since I have posted on this part of the forum but there are a load of completely strange people on here.loopdaloop wrote: »Hi,

The reason you are receiving letters is that when you leave any bank account even if it is within the overdraft facility but fail to make payments then it will trigger a letter asking for money to be paid in from a collections team. Most banks have triggers for when they believe an account is going dormant or that perhaps the account holder has gone away with a balance owing. Pay some money in even if it is a small amount every so often and you don't get letters. To be honest, I would pay some money into the account even if it is a small amount.
I hope that explains the "why" question.0 -
Read your terms and conditions.
Just to let you know overdrafts are repayable on demand. Be careful, that's not the next step they are going to take if they view you as a risk!
Pay in some money in every week and get the debt cleared. After that, close it down if you dislike them so much.
The cheek is when people borrow money and don't want to pay it back!0 -
Changes to Santander's Ts&Cs From 1 August 2010
A bank (current) account becomes dormant after 1 year without transactions. "Once your account becomes dormant we may transfer your balance to another account and we reserve the right to deduct an annual fee from your balance to cover the costs of administering and running your account".0
