Quote contains mild peril: 'Is that the stuff where you get 3 skinny bars in a pack for 99p?' Unquote.

They do loads of different chocolate, big bars, skinny bars, nutty, plain, milky, white - it's all fabulous.
I also heartily recommend their ice creams, Magnum, Cornetto & Solero lookalikes - all excellent. Also the 1 litre tubs of ice cream - divine.
The cooked meats & cheeses are great.
Cheap olive oil - big thumbs up.
Cheap coffee - as good as Kenco in my opinion.
Just be brave and give it a trial, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I asked my Lidl's why they don't have baskets and they said too many of them are stolen so they stopped supplying them.

My Lidl has no easily accessible boxes to use instead of baskets - all the empty boxes are behind the checkouts.

It's odd, how much variation between Lidl stores there is.
I'd agree with the trolley = likely to buy more comment, but the reason Lidl give is that not providing baskets helps to keep their costs down.
If possible, I'd suggest nabbing one of the fruit/veg boxes - find the one with the least in and put the stuff in the box beneath/behind.

Also, check some of the latest and upcoming offers here - http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/i.home, or grab a leaflet instore to get the full of range.

When ever I shop in either Lidl/Aldi I just find a box/tray on the shelf with only a few items in it then take them all out re-stack them the shelf and put my shopping in the box/tray that I have.

I love Lidls fruit juices, the lunchbox type cartons are bigger than most supermarkets ones and cheaper and their big cartons are wonderful. the freeway fizzy orange is very similar tasting to orangina and unless i've got mixed up, does not contain aspartme - esque sweeteners either.

Their W5 branded washing powder is great, chorizo sausage is excellent and so cheap and we also love the chocolate, lol, and the toaster waffles, filled croissants, bacon, coleslaw.....
  • Thanks everyone. Looks like its going to be chocolate, then!

It can be good to get a trolley, unless you are only getting one or two items, because then you can put all your paid for shopping into it, wheel it to one side and bag/box up your purchases at your leisure.

A lot of the 'unknown' labels are very well known in Europe, and if you check the ingredients you will see that, for instance, ham, sausages etc have very little water or filler ingredients added compared to many well known brands.

Olive oil, ice cream, chocolate and frozen cream doughnuts all excellent; baked beans the only non Heinz ones that my OH will eat; easy supermarket to shop in once you get used to it because they don't tend to have loads of varieties of one thing, so quick to get around. Alcohol very good value as well.

Lidl opened here a week or so ago :)

I used to go to the one 20 miles away(when i was passing) before, so was really excited on opening day. I love the quality of the food, coleslaw, cheeses, packet meat, 74% cocoa chocolate, fruit and veg ect ect.

The only gripe i have with them really is that after filling the huge trolley they only provide a minute counter at the end of the till for you to pack your shopping on :( which makes life very difficult.

I heard the usual complaints on opening day about having no baskets and the older people were confused by the foreign look of everything and couldn't quite figure out what was what. One old couple got to the till and loaded a full trolley onto the conveyor belt and as the checkout girl started to put the shopping through they asked for carrier bags she explained they were under the counter and they would need to pay for them. The old man said a few choice words and they left all of the shopping and walked out. I didn't quite get this as our local Kwik Save had just recently shut down after many years in the town and they had always charged for bags and no one seemed to complain.

I always take my sturdy M&S and Sainburys bags. Even when i have been caught out and forgotten my bags i dont mind paying a few pence for some carriers as i know the savings compared to Tesco more than make up for it.

the reason they fling theshopping through aldi is that they have to scan 1000 an items an hour, what that is per minute i dont know
