New Lidl - what do you recommend?

Options
Lidl have opened a new store in my nearest town. I had a quick recce, but I didn't buy much 'cos I wasn't confident about trying all the unknown (to me) brands. I suppose it will be a case of trial & error in the end, but has anybody got any recommendations, or general opinions about the quality of their products?

  • I normally only go there when they do their half price fruit & veg. If you haven't found out yet, check if they have baskets. No, seriously, the one near me doesn't. Some lunatic actually designed a supermarket without baskets, and I only found this out after I went in (for just a few things so I didn't take one of their humungous trolleys) and when I tried to sneak out the "in" door in order to get to a trolley easily, I set off an alarm and a harsh recorded voice told me not to exit via the entrance!
Their bacon misshapes are a good buy at £1.15 a 1kg pack, though.

None of the Lidl stores have baskets - just grab an empty box of the hundreds they have. ;) Trolley's require a £1 deposit. Don't foget to bring your own bags either as they charge for them.

Specials begin on Mondays and Thursdays so expect them to be busy in the morning. Certainly don't go in a rush hour - they rarely have more than one or two checkouts open. They also have a tendency to 'fling' your stuff through, so have your bags at the ready. :D

Lidl sell the best chocolate ever, better than Lintd and Thorntons. Every thing I've tried from there has been superb value for money, just done try the baked beans, they are horrid :)

My Lidl has no easily accessible boxes to use instead of baskets - all the empty boxes are behind the checkouts. I assume the theory behind it is that if you have to get a trolley when you only wanted a basket, you'll finish up putting more stuff in it. Unfortunately there is no warning about the absence of baskets, so new customers naturally assume they can pick one up inside (as in any normal shop) then finish up stuck without a basket and so buy only what they can carry easily. Given that they're competing with a Morrisons which is within 5 mins walk, it's a somewhat foolish strategy.

It is all good high quality - mostly German - products. In Germany it is illegal to add vegetable fats to chocolate (which is done in all UK and US chocolate). Consequently the only fats are cocoa fats. This tends to make the chocolate much higher quality than British, because the vegetable fats used as fillers in the UK are not added.
