I have just received this from British Gas -

"Your WebSaver 1 tariff has come to an end but you can keep saving with EnergySmart from British Gas
As you may remember, your WebSaver 1 tariff expired on the 31 March 2010. Don't worry - there's nothing you need to do. We have automatically transferred you to our Standard tariff from 1 April 2010 and you will benefit from our recent gas price drop. View our Standard gas and electricity prices along with our terms and conditions."

Am I being conned or is there a better one for me with British gas?

Thanks,

MM30

See? We told you they would whinge!

No, you are not being conned. And, yes, there are cheaper tariffs available from British Gas (or many other suppliers).

WebSaver7 is exactly the same as WebSaver1 in principle - pay by direct debit, view your bill online, get a discount. You'll be locked in until 1st July 2011, and you'll pay an exit fee of £30 if you leave before that unless you are moving house. You can quite easy switch to WebSaver7 by going to the home page, clicking 'apply' and then logging in methinks. Minimum 6% discount off standard rates.

    Hope that helps :)

Thanks for that and other posts above, I have gone with Websaver7 saving 14%, but could have saved another 6% by changing supplier and got Quidco cash back as well.

If they do this again I will move to another supplier!

    If they do what ?

Put you on a tariff with no tie ins? .

You would be the first one moaning if they locked you into another tariff. Honestly what were they supposed to do If you knew it was coming to an end be proactive search for the cheapest deal for you.

Just checked the T&Cs (always read these) - http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/energy/our-products/websaver/terms-and-conditions.html

"At the end of the WebSaver 7 guaranteed discount period we may switch your product(s) to another product or to our Standard variable credit prices."

Looks like you may be locked into another tariff or may be moved on to standard.

Please can someone give me a pointer in plain English as I am totally confused....

I am with BG Click 6 for dual fuel. Last time I checked they were on websaver 1 and I was better off sticking with Click 6. Now I see they are on WS7.

    My questions are:

1 should I be switching to WS7 (if I stay with BG)

OR if I decide to go to Scottish Power, which is showing up cheaper on the tables for me, do they also play this game of constantly bringing out new tariffs and leaving existing customers behind?

Really I just want a good deal without the smoke and mirrors, but maybe I am asking too much?

    Any advice appreciated

No 'one size fits all all' answer I am afraid.

It depends on how much gas and electricity you use, where you live and how you pay(DD or quarterly) However generally WS7 is cheaper than Click 6.

As an example, someone living in Midlands with average consumption(20,500kWh gas and 3300kWh electricity) paying by Direct debit would be £98 a year better off on WS7. ( there are several other cheaper companies)
