Secondary ICT PGCE without ICT degree?

Hi all,
Hoping somebody may be able to give me some advice on this - maybe you or someone you know has been in the same situation?

I am currently studying a degree in Accounting and Finance at the
University of East Anglia, and was looking at possible PGCE options for
September 2011.

I am particularly interested in a secondary PGCE in ICT, but am aware that I am currently studying Accounting and Finance (and going into my final year this coming September).

I'm wondering what my options could be regarding undertaking a PGCE in ICT after completing my current degree - would it even be possible?
For information, I have/will have studied 60 UG Credits during the course of my degree in ICT-related modules (first-year Introduction to Information Systems; second-year Information Systems for
Management; third-year Introduction to Computer Programming).

I don't have an IT A-Level as my secondary school didn't offer a course which didn't clash with other subjects I was doing. I was offered a job as an IT Technician with my secondary school after I left, but I turned this down to go to university.

Does anyone know if I would even stand a chance with an application, either for a PGCE or SCITT scheme?

Thanks

    Hi there,

I did a teaching degree and the best thing to do would be to check with the universities you are applying to. They are very helpful at talking to you about alternative qualifications.

    Good luck!

You can do a subject knowledge enhancement course to help you but as already said, you should look at the admissions requirements/contact the admissions office of the universities you want to go to.
For more information go to the TDA PGCE website
  • All the places I have looked at have said to do a secondary PGCE you need at least 50% of your degree to be in your chosen subject...I don't want to have to do another degree!

    What qualifications do you need?

You must have a UK undergraduate degree or a recognised equivalent qualification. Find out if your qualifications are equivalent to UK qualifications through UK NARIC. If your degree subject does not link closely to the subject you intend to teach, you may improve your ability to gain a place on an ITT programme by following a subject knowledge enhancement course.

unless you're crazy-rich, you wouldn't be able to afford to do another one - £10k + fees per year and no funding for living costs!
  • Exactly! And i'm not crazy-rich, quite the opposite :P

MrsManda: I've had a look at that already, but you can only do a subject knowledge enhancement course if you've already been offered a place on the condition you do one of those - to be offered a place, most centers require at least 50% of a degree to be in the chosen subject! :(
