Wordpress - uk based hosting needed

I'm a bit confused by wordpress - always thought I was techie but it's got me flummoxed!
Anyway, I don't think my existing hosting (one.com) supports wordpress as you seem to need something called cpanel?
Can anyone recommend a cheap hosting package that would support wordpress, preferably with UK based servers (I believe this helps with SEO?)
And can anyone recommend any useful websites to learn about how to install it...the one one wordpress's own website seems to go from explaining what a blog is (I get that bit!) to talking about MySQL and PHP (then I'm lost!)

Wordpress does not need CPanel (or Plesk) to install it, but it makes the process a whole lot easier. There are some great 'click' installers that do much of the work for you and much that it pains me the ZEN bronze hosting offers this for about £4.50 a month and it's pretty flawless. There are many other hosting companies so shop around, but I can confirm ZEN's Bronze offers easy installation of Wordpress (and lots of others) via the 'Fantastico' installer, is UK based and has no long tie in (one month - get running for under a fiver).

its relatively simple to setup imo, but if your a bit worried then you could just get the domain, setup redirection and point it towards the free blog hosting wordpress provide themselves, unless you actually wanted to modify wordpess for some reason.

I don't want it to "bounce" - I mean, I want my domain name to show in the address bar, not the one at wordpress.
Is it really that simple to set wordpress up? It looks really complicated on their website! I have found html simpler and I haven't done a course on that - just picked that and Dreamweaver up but wordpress has me stumped!
  • Hello,

I have 2 wordpress sites, 1 is powered using 1 and 1, which is £8.99 a month ( a bit expensive I think) and one is hosted with fasthosts, which has been quite reliable but I can't comment on price as a friend hosts it.

Where I work we have a re-seller account with heart internet, who offer 1 click wordpress installs, which I have found to be the best host both for price and reliability, looks like you can get an account with them that allows a wordpress blog for £8.99 a month also (with 5,000 MB bandwith). I've also found their support team really friendly and helpful.

£9 seems to be about average. But if it came down to who, then depends on support/ease of use, for which Heart Internet would win with me.:j

I have two reseller accounts, with different hosts. One's eukhost, can't remember who the other one is, blue something or other. For about £60-100/year apiece (can't remember how much), I can have as many domains as I want and unlimited bandwidth etc. They both have cpanel and one click installs of Wordpress, which is easy peasey.

Once set up, check out the Wordpress plugins that will do an automatic backup and email it to you (I get mine emailed to me daily, through my gmail account) .... this means all my backups are accessible to me wherever I am and I can easily forward them to anybody if I needed help restoring any site (never needed to). wp-backup is the one I use I think. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/ I do that as the very first thing on every new domain/wordpress blog I set up.

Easiest way to go is to get a host that uses "C-Panel" then it's a simple click and wait for 30 seconds then you're good to go!

Personaly I went with "Rochenhost" (£4.95mo for "Starter site")
    They have great customer support.

    Hey,

All you need to do is make sure the host you pick can support PHP and MYSQL.

One.com does indeed support these so you should be good to go.

In simple Terms, PHP is the programming language that the software uses, the server needs to be able to understand this so your host has to support PHP.

The MYSQL part is the database where the blog stores all your data.

When people are talking about cPanel, Plesk, H-Sphere, DirectAdmin, just to name a few, these are the control panels that your host offers, last time I checked one.com uses there own control panel. In these control panels are buttons which allow you to do all the uploading and downloading and installing with just a few clicks.

If you want a hand in setting up the blog just give me a PM and ill install it for you  EDIT: Free of charge haha, will have to be in the evening though as i'm going to be out tomorrow.

So to go over, no, you don't need to change hosts, one.com supports PHP and MYSQL. All you need to do is download the scripts then upload them to the server then run the install.

    Hope this clears stuff up.

Thank you. All those posts are really, really helpful!
I have a new question now....
The "reseller" accounts that only cost £60 - £100 a year....I have a couple of websites : one on fasthosts at £60 a year and another two at one.com that are £20 a year. It strikes me that if on a reseller account you can have more than one website, I'd be better off doing that and having several sites on one account?

    Thats a good point,

What a resellers account does is allow you to create new accounts, which can come in handy if you have one or more sites or want to give some space to family and friends.

You can get a resellers account fairly cheap nowadays.

UK Reseller accounts are still quite pricey, I would say about £10 a month for a decent service, however if you don't mind your site being stored in the USA you can pick reseller accounts up dirt cheap.

Some UK based resellers I can highly reccommend are:

InnoHosting & EZPZHosting both offer great service, i slightly prefer EZPZHosting as they offer you a more personal service, if you ask for 'Dan' and just tell him you need to run a few sites under one account and you think it would be best if you use a resellers account instead of using just the one account, and you don't need the free WHMCS licence and end user support and the free domain, I can't see why he can't knock anything off the bill.

However, I found this company, http://pcsmarthosting.com/reseller.php

I have never used them personally, however I remember a friend of mine used to rent one of there dedicated servers, can't remember if he said if they were any god or not, but they are only £40 for the year which seems very cheap and they are quite a known company.

    Good Luck :j
