Legally, unless the clothes are faulty, there's no obligation for Debenhams to give you a refund at all so by giving you a giftcard they doing more than they are required to do. Some places wouldn't give a refund at all.
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

This has been debenhams policy for a while now - there were signs up by the tills but I don't know if they still have them now.

They did have signs behind the till in the shop but there is nothing on their website to say this, so when i ordered i didnt realise. Being as its childrens clothes that can/do vary in size i wouldnt have bothered tbh had i known.:(

You say in brackets that "if you buy them online"

If you bought online you are protected under distance sellings regs and may have a refund by law
"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."

All truth goes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then, it is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as self-evident.

You only have to notify them of your intention to return the goods within seven working days, starting with the day after delivery.

You have 30 days to actually return the goods.

It's not just children's clothes - it applies to menswear too. The assistant I had the last time I returned an on-line order in-store seemed pretty determined I shouldn't get a refund, just a gift card but she called her superior over who authorised a refund. I think it's only for in-store pruchases that this rule appies.
