Ok, I managed to find this thread and that saves starting a new one.
Since posting this thread I have ALWAYS kept a 5 or 6 garlic cloves (in their skin of course) at the bottom of the bowl where I keep my organic apples. NONE of them has spoiled, except the odd brown little stain here and there. Sometimes they have lasted 2 whole weeks.
Doesn't work for satsumas etc, and I don't know for bananas because I like them so much that I have to buy them two at a time or I'll eat them all.
I use the garlic from the bowl when I need it, and replace it with fresh cloves.
I bought two large bags of organic gala apples well before Christmas and I still have the contents of a full one in the bowl, perfectly fresh.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
