Can i get a disabled parking badge for my son who has perthes?

My son was recently diagnosed with having perthes in his right hip. Luckily at the moment its quite mild and not affecting his life too much except when we go shopping or into town. Then he limps and complains he is in pain. He will be 4 in december and i wondered if and how i could apply for a blue badge? Do i have to apply for disability benefits first(Not sure he is entitled to any??) or can i apply for the parking badge separately? Any advice gratefully received.

Usually you would be required to be in receipt of higher rate mobility DLA, depends on local council's policy.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

Just found this on my local councils website..........

You may qualify for a badge if you:

    are registered blind.
have a severe disability in both upper limbs, regularly drive a motor vehicle but cannot turn the steering wheel by hand even if that wheel is fitted with a turning knob.
have a permanent and substantial disability which means that you are unable to walk or have very considerable difficulty walking.
receive the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance
receive a War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.
use a motor vehicle supplied for disabled people by a government health department
Think i will apply anyway, it would certainly benefit my son.

Yes as I said depends on local councils policy. Ours refuse if the person is not in receipt of higher rate mobility we have found. Pleased to see yours sounds a little better.

Anyway might be worth while applying for DLA for your son as sounds like you may be able to qualify for something at least, the worse they can say is no.

    Good luck

  • I'm afraid not. To be awarded with a blue badge he must be in receipt of high rate mobility DLA which he is very unlikely to get. Perthes Disease is not a sever condition especially the age your son is. As you are properly awere he will most likey have an operation to realign the joint which as a very high success rate. He will only be incapacitated a matter of months before he is up and running again without any problems.

Speak to your local social work department.
I have arthritis in my knees, but not severe enough to qualify for any disability or mobility benefits.

On advice of my GP, I phoned social work who sent me out a form. I completed it and asked my GP to write a letter in support of my application, which he did. I got my badge. I realise other councils may be different, but it is worth making the phone call.

I got a blue badge, when I was first diagnosed with MS and I DIDN'T have DLA at all. I have the higher rate DLA now and of course have the blue badge. what I say is, if you don't ask, you don't get - no harm in asking. Go for it!

By the way, the badge is an absolute God-send!

you can get the badge , without dla, you need a letter from his doctor, to take to the local blue badge office , for proof of his discomfort, disability etc, my father in law gets breathless but doesnt get dla and he got a badge with a letter from his doc x
    hope this helps

I got a blue badge for a child who was not in reciept of DLA. Give it a try. If you going to apply for DLA it may be easier to do that first though.

Sorry to re-bump up this thread but this quote is completely incorrect.
Yes Perthes can in some cases correct itself, but not always..As for the operations they aren't to "cure" the disease only to help manage the condition.
Unless you have a child with perthes no one will understand the pain the child has.

And yes you will get a blue badge for a child with Perthes.

If you need any help or advice for fighting for benefits/etc for a child with perthes feel free to message me.

Perthes is a disability..wether it lasts a couple of year's or life...the pain and complications affect daily life.
