Finding private properties to rent

I'm looking to rent a place in the south east of England and wanted to find out what sources people have used in the past to find private landlords. The local paper is usually a good start and I am already aware of gumtree. Are there any other recommended websites that list properties with private landlords?

My landlord put an ad up in the local police station and church! Have a look in news agent windows too.
  • why do you not want to go through an agency? if it is because of fees try looking at a small local agency- our current home is rented through one and we were able to negotiate all admin fees right down compared to out last agency which was large

Yes. I want to minimise/avoid the fees that they charge.

Thanks though - I never thought that small local agencies would be any cheaper.

It's well known - but be careful on gumtree. Plenty of honest people (like me, who uses it often) but lots of fraudsters too.

They are faily easy to spot. A perfect flat, 20% or so cheaper, a sob story... and then eventually a request to send some money to yourself (oh, and send us a copy of the Western Union receipt)... and then you lose all the money as they can use the receipt to claim the money. Even if it is in your name.

And somehow, they are never available to take a call, and may be overseas etc.
