Npower scam?

I swapped to Npower just over a year ago on the conclusion they were going to be cheaper as per working it out on moneysupermarket Npower set my direct debit low and everything looked rosey. until they reviewed the account 12 months later and said i hadn't paid enough, i was then told my direct debit would be £162 per month but i would out of debt in 6 months just been on phone and i still owe them £600? are they doing this as a scam to keep me rather than losing me to another provider? they know not everyone has £600 laying around so they offer you terms to get it paid over a period of time so you have to stay with them? i feel screwed to the floor over this, Npower have now offered me the new lower tariff and keep my direct debit at £162 and in 12 months my debt will be clear and my bills will be £20 per month cheaper? have checked moneysupermarket and the nearest for my consumption is only £70 cheaper than that per year? what should i do find the £600 pay it off and leave to save £70 or carry on paying what they say and hope that it is not a scam and in 12 months time i will be clear of debt??

What tariff are you on?
When I moved from npower's standard tariff to Go Fix dual fuel they set my direct debit at £40 a month. When I received my first bill on 3 March, I was £135.02 in debit. After reading some of the posts on here (like yours) I rang npower and my direct debit is now £54.00 a month (£36.00 electric and £18.00 gas). I should clear the debt in a couple of months.

There's nothing to stop you looking at your meters, looking at your bills, looking at how much you have paid, and looking at how much you have spent. You then know how much you need to pay/will be reimbursed when you choose to look to switching. Or you can ask for the debit payments to be altered. No entrapment whatsoever.0

Sorry to disappoint you, but the interest its costing them on the debt you owe has probably wiped out all their profit on you as a customer.
i.e. there is absolutely no benefit to deliberately put you into debt.
Most people complain the other way round - that they are always in credit0 -

The op needs to get their meter readings and check if these are correct and that they have been billed correctly0
