I had a DD coming out of my account (£200) and only had 2 cheques of £500 in my account which apparently had not cleared on time (I did not know this as on the internet banking page it showed the money to be in the accoutn and it did not tell me the money showing up to be there was not cleared.)
Anyway I assumed the bank had honoured the DD ok because I checked my balance the next day and it showed I had £800 in the account. Then today I received a letter saying I had defaulted on the DD and was being charged £30 etc. I rang the company who were taking the DD and they said it had been paid on time but my bank "retrieved" it 2 days later and therefore it is a default!
I am trying to get a new mortgage at the minute and I am really worried this will ruin my application. Is there anything I can do? And also why was it paid and then retrieved??
Please help

Yes, phone up the bank, tell them what had happened, tell them you aren't happy and 9 times out of 10 they will refund you the charge without much hassle. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

Thanks. The same thing happened on my other ac with them at the start of the week because they hadn't changed my student account to a grad one (although they told me they had a month ago) and so my overdraft wasn't activated
Which also lead to me being unable to use my card to pay for petrol I had got (VERY embarrasing)
I just hope it doesn't mean my mortgage application gets turned down0 -
I wouldn't have thought so, plus if you get them to remove the charge, and your account is in credit or within your overdraft by the end of the month it highly unlikely it would affect you. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... I have applied for the mortgage with my bank  and was expecting to receive an offer on friday so now I'm just a bit worried. Figers crossed anyway though and I'll give my branch a ring on Monday morning to see why they retrieved my DD0

Just to say, I have had the mortgage pretty much turned down as a result. I'm waiting to hear back tomorrow as I complained that although the uncleared cheque was my fault, they had only changed their rules recently and I hadn't realised and also I wasn't to know it hadn't cleared via my internet banking/balance at cash machine.
Finger crossed0 -
Did they actually say that was the reason? It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Yes. It happened on 2 of my accounts within 2 days. A direct debit on each was refused and that's what they have queried. I had lodged enough in each but only in cheques and neither had cleared on time.
Its the 2 of them that are causing the probs. As my mortgage advisor says, if I was using a different bank to my own they probably wouldn't have realised as it only happened last week so I don't even have statements to show them up.0
