Stolen handbag

Some idiot stole my handbag tonight, literally from my arms while sitting outside a bar. The cards are all cancelled and phones/blackberries etc i have insurance, the upsetting thing is the stuff the stupid guy cant sell on; my stuff. Specs are about £250 to replace, make up and perfume at least £100, sunglasses £120, bag was a nice leather second hand mulberry for £90. Very upset but im wondering whether its worth claiming on home contents insurance. The policy allows for personal possessions. We havent claimed for 8 years, £300 premium £100 excess (south london:p:p).

If we end up paying double home insurance next year due to the claim I'd rather do without the above stuff and make do with other bags and cheapo make up and my old (blurry) glasses.

Anyone with any experiences or advice?

I can't say that my insurance premiums have ever gone up from making a claim, and lets be honest if you are not intending to claim, why have you got the insurance in the first place :-)

I would just give the insurance company a call and put the question to them, they will be able to estimate your next years premiums based upon the claim and indeed it may not impact at all

I had two claims in one year a couple of years ago now. My renewal was high, so I just shopped around and saved about £100 by going elsewhere.
  • you may have brought the bag second hand - but how much would a replacement cost? if the policy is like for like and new for old then they'd have to replace the bag.

so if it would cost a good few hundred to replace then yeah - worth claiming.
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!

Sorry to read of your experience; I would claim as that is the whole point of having insurance! I have lost bags/ purse a couple of times, mainly through my own stupidity but also pickpocketing. I learned the hard way NOT to carry a ton of stuff that was only valuable to me or a pain to replace.

  • Do you have protected no claims?

If so then your next years premium won't be affected.

Its a common misconception that insurers can 'estimate' your next years premium based on a claim you have made in the current year.

We used to get loads of phone calls from customers about to make a claim asking how their premium would be affected and all we could really tell them was that there would be an increase.

The premiums were worked out by the system using relevant information available at the time of renewal.

Not true. Even if you protect the No Claim Discount, you aren't protecting the premium.

    True.

The premium could still go up.
