Not another travel money post

Unfortunately it is....

Going to Sri Lanka for 2 weeks - 1 week touring and 1 week at the beach - staying in hotels each night.

I have recently found out that the Sri Lankan Rupee is no longer a closed currency but the number of places that list it "for sale" is very small and I am not sure what to do for money.

I have £800 to "take" with me and my credit cards for emergencies (eg if the misses sees some saphires that she just must have :o )

I am not sure the best way of doing this though.... not many places seem to sell the SL Rupee and certainly looking at the post office their offered conversion rate is terrible - would lose 25% of the money I had to convert back.

I will be touring the country in the first week and 7 miles outside the capital in week 2 so am not sure how many ATM machines there are going to be about the place and if they are going to have english on the screens to rely on justing by switch/ current account card to get money out.

Anyone who is more up on foreign money and particularly for a country like Sri Lanka have any suggestions of the best way to do this?

I don't know why anyone buys foreign currency in the UK.

Maybe some for the first day and the rest in Sterling Travellers cheques.

Personally, I would just take my Nationwide cards, with a little cash or a cheque or two as back up.

The concern with cards is the fact they obviously wont accept debit cards for payment in hotels/ stores etc and a few guides I have read say that there arent a great number of ATMs that can accept international cards or display the instructions in english which is why I was looking for other peoples opinions/ experiences

Since I can't guess where you are staying, I can only give general advice; http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/

You can change TCs or withdraw cash.

    COMMERCIAL BANK OF CEYLON LIMITED
    BANDARANAYAKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

I would keep a mix of TCs, cards and some £s in cash for emergencies.
