Hi guys,

I recently picked up some troughs that are 1m long x 17cm wide x 18cm deep

I wondering what I could get away with growing in them space wise....

I assume lettuces and similar leafy crops will be fine, but what about minibel tomato? cucumber? courgette? radishes? chillis?

I just don't have much clue how much space everything needs :(

The troughs look like this if it helps:

Any of those you mention will be ok. I'd say 2 toms or 1 courgette or 3 chillis. Courgettes are greedy feeders so would be better in a bigger pot but if you are willing to water and feed it could be ok. Radish would be fine...maybe a crop in between the toms before they grow really big?

I've bought some similar troughs, i've put gravel at the bottom (made holes in base of trough first) then stuck a bit of horse manure and compost in and i am hoping to plant my strawberry plants in them when they arrive (Fothergills offer).

Not big enough for sweetcorn, even minipop grow quite tall and have deeper roots than the pot.

Last year I grew 2 courgettes in one because I ran of of ground for the last 2. They did OK but did not produce as much as the in ground ones.

Fine for chillis, strawberries, herbs would be another option.

those tiny stir fry corn will grow too big for a trough? Gulp! I was planning on harvesting them when they are really small and then i will dehydrate them, my troughs are quite deep so i should be okay i think.

I thought that when I first planted them, and found out the hard way.
Pick the cobs when they are small off of the big plant!

I'm no expert but I have similar troughs and I'm trying spring onions ,mini carrots and rocket in mine as they dont need to much depth of soil and dont grow too big

We grow lettuce, rocket, spring onions, shallots, strawberries & herbs in ours. We start the lettuce off every couple of weeks, then when we've harvested them the hens get the stumps to play with :)
