I'm hoping someone can help me here. I have tried to be VERY specific:
I have an email account with hotmail that works perfectly well. For the purpose of this I'll call it john@hotmail.com
I also have an account with googlemail that I use for personal emails. That works perfectly well too. For this purpose I'll call it john88@googlemail.com
I can access both these accounts as normal from any PC.
My problem is this: Somewhere along the line there must be some settings wrong on my googlemail account. Here's why:
When I send messages from my iPhone mail account (googlemail account) to certain addresses I get that message myself. Now I know someones gonna say 'You've set it to send you a copy of every email you send from your googlemail account. Well, that's not true, and here's why:
Today I sent a message from my iPhone(googlemail account) to an address similar to this: phil@yahoo.co.uk.
Indeed, Phil received that message and all was well.
Then, 5 minutes later I sent myself a message to my works email account (john&myworkplace.com), (messages come in through the server at work and we read them in Thunderbird). Again, I received that mail with no problems. So, up to now, 2 messages sent from my iphone and both are ok. My folders now read Sent 2. Inbox 0. Which is correct. Now comes the problem...
10 minutes later I send a message from my iPhone to my hotmail address (john@hotmail.com). As normal, that message goes and on checking my hotmail inbox on a desktop PC, that message has arrived, just like the other 2 messages I sent. However, my inbox on my iPhone now shows a new message in the inbox. On checking, it is the message that I sent to my hotmail account!
Now, I can rule out that I have set the googlemail account to send me a copy of all outgoing messages, because I didn't receive a copy of the messages I sent to phil@yahoo or the message I sent to john@myworkplace.com. All 3 messages were identical, but I only got a copy of the one I sent to my hotmail account!
Ok, so some may say that I've set my hotmail account to forward incoming messages to my googlemail account. Well, I can rule that out too because I receive 10 messages per day into my hotmail account and none of them get forwarded to my googlemail account.
So, to try and rule out the iphone, I went home, fired up google on my home desktop. Logged into my googlemail account and sent a message to my hotmail account. Lo & behold, that mail has just arrived on my phone and in my inbox in my googlemail account on my partners PC, so surely that rules out faulty phone settings because no matter how or from where I send a message from my googlemail account to my hotmail account I get it on my phone.
For clarity, here is how my iphone is set up. Please ignore the numbers at the start of each line. I have put them in so I can refer to a certain line by its number.
1) iPhone Home screen
2) settings
3) Mail, Contacts, Calenders. I press this, and here's what I see:
4) Accounts
5) john88@googlemail.com > Account on >
6) Name John Smith
7) Address john88@googlemail.com
8) Password *******
9) Description john88@googlemail.com
10)
11)Outgoing Mail Server smtp.gmail.com >
12)Advanced >
13)
14)So I click the arrow at the end of the line (Line 11) here) that says Outgoing Mail Server smtp.gmail.com and I see this:
15)Primary Server
16)smtp.gmail.com On >
17)
18)Other SMTP Servers
19)smtp.gmail.com On >
20)Add Server >
21)
22)If mail is unsuccesful using the primary server, it will try the other SMTP servers in succesion.
23)
24)So I click the arrow as in Line 16) here
25)Here's what I see:
26) Server On
27) Outgoing Mail Server
28) Host Name smtp.gmail.com
29) User Name john88@googlemail.com
30) Password ******
31) Use SSL On
32) Authentification Password >
33) Server Port 587
34)
35)So I go back to the previous screen, and click and I'm back to the view as in lines 16 to 20.
36)The whole screen & results are exactly the same as lines 26 to 33 above although these are not greyed out.
37)So I go back to the previous screen (Lines 15 to 20) and go back again so I see lines 6 to 12
38)I now click Advanced and see the following:
39)Mailbox Behavious
40)Drafts Mailbox Drafts>
41)Deleted Mailbox Trash>
42)Incoming settings
43)Use SSL On
44)Authentification Password >
45)IMAP Path Prefix /
46)Server Port 993
Anybody any ideas??
