Want a new bed - what to buy?

I need a new bed for my spare room upstairs. So I thought I would put my now rather old double bed upstairs for the occasional use it will get and buy myself a new bed.

Was just about to get a Silentnight bed when I read all the negative reviews on here. Now where to go?

I want a double bed but it's only me in it - I'm not very tall nor heavy.

What am I looking for???

Sprung slatted base with latex mattress is the way to go - I could never go back to an old fashioned sprung matress again!

It all depends on your budget?

If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.

Not entirely sure what is realistic at the moment.

Any pointers to good online sellers?

You would need to give some sort of price limit to work out what sort of bed you could get within that budget.

I'm afraid I can't give recommendations as it could be viewed as advertising....sorry.

    Probably around £450/£500 mark.

Sorry - didn't realise you were in the trade.

Anyway with a bit of research La Romantica Madrid seems a good option although I'm not too sure on memory foam as I have heard a few saying it is too warm, especially in summer.

Also unsure on storage options - if indeed I need any as I'm not short on storage space not it's only me in the house. What's the difference between slide storage and drawer storage?

There are two main reasons why some people say that memory foam mattresses are hot:

    1. Most memory foam mattresses are reflex foam with memory foam on top (this is because they are easier to manufacture). With this type of mattress there is no way for air to circulate under the memory foam layer to dissipate the heat. With proper full size pocket springs under the memory foam it can.

    2. Some manufacturers use too deep a layer of memory foam, and then try to get you to spend more by saying “the more memory foam the better”. The truth is that if the memory foam is too deep you will just sink deeper into the mattress, making you too hot. The optimum depth of memory foam layers is 2", as you don't get any extra benefit from deeper memory foam, but if it is deeper then you will sink deeper into it, which can make you too hot.

There are climate control fabrics like Climasmart and Outlast available on some models of memory foam mattress, which would help to stabilise the temperature.

I personally have a pocket sprung with memory foam mattress without any climate control fabric, and I don't find it too hot. But for people who are sensitive to heat it may be worth going for either a climate control fabric, or latex instead of memory foam.

A slide store on a double bed would be a sliding door at the foot end of the bed. Drawers are obviously drawers.

My parents have a Silentnight Miracoil 3 with 25mm of memory foam - they have had it for around 2 years and seem to like it.

Now I know Silentnight is slated on here - so what is wrong with the Miracoil mattresses (if you're allowed to say that is)?

I can't say I'm particularly sensitive to heat and will be the sole user of the double bed.

Any thoughts on ease of use, amount of storage space between the two?

Thanks for all your help so far by the way.

Your parents have been very lucky......so far.

The Miracoil spring system is a continuous system that used to used by most bed manufacturers. But most manufacturers have now stopped using it due to it being very noisey, and very unreliable. I personally must have spoken to 1000's of people who have all said that their Miracoil mattress lasted 12 to 18 months.

I actually refuse to sell them.

If you aren't sensetive to heat then you should be fine without the climate control fabric.

Slide store will give slightly more space, as it opens up the whole of the foot end of the bed. The only problem is getting things out that are right at the back (I used to send the kids in). Drawers are far more convenient as you can open them and see what is in the drawer.

Might be difficult to fit my kids in now seeing as they are 5ft8ins and 5ft10ins. ;)

Thank you again for your help.

    Tim,

I am another one of those people that have gotten cheated by Dreams. I ordered the Mozart superking divan set in a comfort level 4, but it turned out to be as hard as a rock. The bed is by Hypnos. They sent out a guy from the company Fira, and the guy said that there is reason to doubt that the bed was labeled properly. Dreams says their report says no fault found (but I can't see their report, which is a different one that our report.) I would like to just have my money back, but they are going to make that extremely difficult, so I will try to get recourse with their Dreams Comfort Guarantee. The only mattresses we can choose are made by Parker or Pocket Spring. I can't find any info on the net about these companies. Do you have any info on them? I could choose a different Hypnos, but why would I do that when they messed the first one up so badly. It is a beautiful looking bed, but I haven't slept well in a month since we got it! Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
