Pension Credit/Housing and Council Tax Benefits

Hi, I wonder if you can help me? I am a single woman of 60, living on my own and I will be receiving a State Pension, total of £126.81 per week which is taxable, I believe that I can top this up with Pension Credits to the amount of £132.60, which I believe is the applicable amount the government say you can live on. I will also have savings of about £9240 from a private pension fund. Will this affect my Housing and Council tax benefit? My rent is around £117 per week and my Council Tax is about £19.11 per week. My question is would I receive full Housing and Council Tax benefit on this income and savings?
Thank you.

    Difficult to say.

If you have been awarded or are awarded Pension Credit Guaranteed Credit, then you would get full HB / CTB. If you are awared Savings Credit, you would most likely get a lot of help but most likely not all.

Also, if you are awarded Savings Credit, the £16000 capital limit applies where it does not apply for PC Guarantee cases.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

Could you tell me what is this Savings Credit award? I have not yet applied as yet for Pension Credits to top up my pension and will do this soon.

    Yes of course, sorry!

There are basically 2 types of pension credit. 1 is called Guaranteed and that is for people who have no savings and who's income is lower than the Govt say they need to live on.

Savings Credit is to reward people who have planned for retirement and saved along the way. This means that even if they have more than the Government say they need to live on per week, they still get a bit extra.

If you contact Pension Service on I think from memory 0845 6060265, they may be able to advise you before you make a claim. Also, the earlier you claim the better reallY!

But having re-read your post, I think as you are 60, you may not qualify for savings credit until you turn 65! Just the guarantee then which would mean that if you live alone, you would get full HB and CTB!
